Make democracy accessible

An analysis of accessibility in elections for people with disabilities.

Political participation and elections are essential parts of democracy. An election in a democracy like Denmark is far from limited to the act and day of voting. Before election day, political rallies are held. At the rallies a big proportion of Danish voters both seek information on the parties’ policies to find out who to vote for and participate in discussions and dialogues on selected key issues.

This report focusses on accessibility in elections for people with disabilities by exploring digital accessibility on political parties’ websites and physical accessibility at 100 randomly selected political rally locations.

Recommendations

Based on this report we have the following recommendations to how accessibility and equal treatment for people with disabilities can be strengthened:

  1. That parliament modify the law, so that the legal requirements for accessibility to public websites and mobile applications also apply to the parties entitled to attend elections for parliament.

  1. That the parties ensure that both written physical election material and the parties’ websites are accessible.

  1. That the parties promote that election rallies are accessible, and that information on accessibility is provided prior to the events.

The report is only available in Danish, but contains an English summary on page 4. The above is anexcerpt from this summary.
