Input to UN consultation on investors, ESG and human rights

The Danish Institute for Human Rights made a submission to the consultation by the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights focused on investors, human rights and ESG, which aims to inform the group’s report at the 56th session of the Human Rights Council in June 2024.

The UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights over the summer for 2023 issued a call for input on specific questions related to investors, ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) and Human Rights.

The Institute in its consultation response aims to share learnings and reflections gained from our work on finance and human rights. The Institute has focused on questions most relevant to our area of work.

The input among other things stresses:

  • The need to scale up respect for human rights by investors and other financial institutions including as it relates to different actors, asset classes and financial products
  • How mainstream ESG approaches do not generally align with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) including its focus on risks to people as opposed to financial risks
  • How current regulatory developments around sustainable finance including in the EU context can be a lever for human rights and reflects on what would be necessary for this to happen.
