The Danish Institute for Human Rights receives prestigious global award
Many years before the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights were endorsed, the Danish Institute for Human Rights started to support some of the world’s largest companies in addressing human rights impacts in their activities.
Based on its long-term experiences with human rights impact assessment in various sectors the Institute has developed a number of unique methodologies that is now being honoured. The International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) has selected the Danish Institute for Human Rights as the recipient of IAIA’s 2018 Global Award.
Transparency and high standards
The IAIA Awards Committee emphasises the Institute’s efforts to share impact assessment guidance and tools publicly, as well as the professional reputation the Institute has gained in several different sectors.
This is the seventeenth year the Global Award has been given. Recent recipients include the International Finance Corporation, the former Special Representative on Business and Human Rights, John Ruggie, and the World Bank.
Providing insights to under-analysed topics
The Global Award will be presented at IAIA’s annual conference, taking place 16 to 19 May in Durban, South Africa. Deputy Executive Director and Head of the International Division at the Danish Institute for Human Rights, Eva Grambye, has been invited to speak at the conference.
“We are honored to receive IAIA’s 2018 Global Award– joining a prestigious group of previous award winners. All kinds of impact assessments are being conducted but not necessarily through a human rights lens. I am looking forward to talk about how human rights can provide new insights on topics that may be missed or under-analysed, such as workers’ and children's rights and the responsibilities and role of state actors,"Eva Grambye says.
The Institute offers masterclass in Durban
As part of the conference the Institute’s Senior Advisers Tulika Bansal and Nora Götzmann facilitated a two-day masterclass focused on practical insights and tools for the integration of human rights in impact assessment. The Masterclass was co-designed and facilitated by Community Insights Group, a consultancy specialised in social performance and impact assessment in the extractive industries.
