Complicity in Human Rights Violations: A Responsible Business Approach to Suppliers

This Working Paper introduces a framework based on sound ethical principles which is capable of being applied to every business-supplier relationship.
Please note

This publication is no longer in circulation, as it predates the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and more recent  and relevant guidance on the topic exists.

Danish companies recognize their duty not only to be good human rights actors themselves, but also to make sure that they act responsibly with regard to human rights issues raised in the context of their suppliers. But exactly what that responsibility entails in practice is ambiguous and the subject of a rather disparate debate.

This Working Paper introduces a framework based on sound ethical principles which is capable of being applied to every business-supplier relationship.

The first part of the paper deals with the principles behind the framework. In the second part of the paper, a concrete framework is presented for monitoring and addressing supply side violations. In the final part of the paper, the framework is applied to the case study of the fictional Danish company ABC.
