The Danish Institute for Human Rights has analysed the new Sustainable Development Goals and published the first human rights guide on the subject. The guide provides essential insights for anyone working with the SDGs.

The UN member states have agreed on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the defining framework for tackling the world's most pressing problems from this day forward until 2030.

The 17 goals and 169 targets set out to, among other things, to eradicate extreme poverty, curb inequality and fight climate change.

After analysing goals and targets, the Danish Institute for Human Rights has published a human rights guide to the SDGs.

Important insights

"Our analysis shows that the SDGs stand on the shoulders of human rights. This provides support and ties the goals to legally binding agreements," explains chief adviser and the guide's co-author, Birgitte Feiring.

The guide provides important insights for governments, UN agencies, national human rights institutions and NGOs working for the realisation of the goals. For groups of people, such as women or persons with disabilities, whose rights are directly addressed by the goals, the guide is equally essential.
