After the beginning of the new millennium more and more European countries have introduced integration tests for foreigners to pass in order to be granted family reunification, unlimited residence permit and/or citizenship in the hosting country. This research project aims to examine the background for the introduction of these tests, their purpose and consequences.
A number of questions remain to be answered, i.e. concerning the impact of the tests on integration and their selective effect if any. The results will be evaluated in the light of international law.
