It is a conventionally held belief that human rights are a European ‘invention,’ going back to Enlightenment philosophers. In his talk Jonas Christoffersen will show that a closer study of the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights reveals a unique Latin American influence on modern human rights law.
Jonas Christoffersen took up the position of Director of the Danish Institute for Human Rights on 1 January 2009. Previously, he was a lecturer at the Law Faculty, University of Copenhagen, where he has been teaching international law, European law and human rights since 1996. As a scholar, he has contributed significantly to the study of national and international human rights law, and defended his doctoral dissertation, “Fair Balance: A Study of Proportionality, Subsidiarity and Primarity in the European Convention on Human Rights” in 2008 (expected publication: Brill, March 2009). Jonas Christoffersen has been active in the Danish public debate on human rights for many years.
