Tomas Martin is specialised in human rights, prison sociology and media. He has broad knowledge of social development issues and has worked with project and programme planning and evaluation within the justice sector and with state and civil society partners. As a trained anthropologist Tomas Martin has considerable methodological knowledge with special skills in qualitative assessments.
Tomas Martin has worked within the development field initially as an assistant in the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Technical Advisory Services, as a consultant for the EU, Danida and the UN and most recently as Project Manager for the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR).
Prior to his academic training, Tomas Martin worked as a production manager in the film industry, where he gained hands-on experience on budget- and project management. He knows the media-world from the inside, technically and practically, and has dealt with South Asian media academically and as a development planner.
During his post-graduate studies, Tomas Martin conducted an anthropological fieldwork on human rights and prison staff in Tihar Jail, New Delhi for six months. He has lived a year in Uganda and has profound experience of working internationally and cross-culturally.
Main Research Interests
Tomas Martin's anthropological research interests have centred on human rights, prison sociology, and Third World media – primarily in a South Asian and East African context and with an applied approach.
