Even though healthcare services are available to ethnic minorities, research indicates that other barriers may prevent them from accessing healthcare services in an adequate fashion. There may be a language barrier, but ethnic minorities may also encounter ‘structural’ barriers when accessing healthcare services.
This seminar will focus on the nature of these barriers and their consequences for ethnic minority patients, and on the human rights perspectives involved. The seminar will enable participants to discuss possible solutions for ensuring equality in accessing health services.
The seminar will be held in English. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required. Please send an email to lzu@humanrights.dk no later than Monday, 31 August 2009 at 12.00 noon.

Background Over the last two decades, complex emergencies resulting from conflict and natural disasters have occurred with increasing frequency throughout the world. At the end of 2001, over 70 different countries experienced an emergency situation, resulting in over 50 million affected persons worldwide. The very conditions that define a complex emergency - conflict, social instability, poverty and powerlessness-are also the conditions that favour the rapid spread of HIV and AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. During a crisis, the effects of poverty, powerlessness and social instability are intensified, increasing people’s vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.
There is therefore an urgent need to incorporate the HIV/AIDS response into the overall emergency response. If not addressed, the impacts of HIV/AIDS will persist and expand beyond the crisis event itself, influencing the outcome of the response and shaping future prospects for rehabilitation and recovery. This seminar seeks to address the question how Danish humanitarian and development organisations can incorporate HIV/AIDS in their programmes to deliver minimum requirements for a response to HIV/AIDS during an emergency situation?
Time and Venue
In collaboration with Aidsnet, Save the Children, Copenhagen School of Global Health and the ENRECA Health Research Network, the Danish Institute for Human Rights is co-organizing the one-day seminar (see programme below). The seminar takes place on Tuesday 24 March from 10:00-16:00 in the Main Auditorium, Strandgade 71.
Registration Participation is free but registration is necessary at www.aidsnet.dk or by writing directly to me (sje@humanrights.dk)

Which types of government are prevalent in Central Asia and Afghanistan? Does the marginalization of individual rights in this region encourage extremism? Can human rights' dialogue replace extremism? We give examples of factors which either promote or restrict the process of creating democratic states based on human rights and the rule of law in the region.

The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) and The Research Partnership Programme (RPP) have the pleasure of inviting you to a research seminar:
Tuesday 20/11 2007, 10:00-14:30. The Danish Institute for Human Rights, Strandgade 56, meeting room W 2.08.
Presentations of Research Work by 2007 Research Partners
RPP 2007 has a regional focus on West Africa as part of the DIHR strategy to expand and intensify the work on protection of human rights in the region.
During the autumn semester, the research partners have worked with two main research themes:
1. the plurality of family law and practices in the region, illustrated through the cases of consent to marriage (Burkina Faso), marriage (Guinea) and dissolution of marriage (Niger)
2. the protection of the rights of juveniles, illustrated by analysis of the juvenile juridical systems in the region.
